Columbia, SC – A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper is being recognized for his bravery after stopping a wrong-way driver on Interstate 77, an act authorities say likely saved multiple lives.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, Senior Trooper R.A. Lee received the Medal of Valor Award last week for his actions during a July 8, 20205, pursuit in Chester County. Lee was assisting the Chester County Sheriff’s Office in chasing a stolen vehicle from North Carolina when the suspect allegedly re-entered the highway traveling the wrong way.

Officials said Lee initially attempted to stop the vehicle with tire-deflating devices, but when the suspect bypassed them, the trooper made a split-second decision to drive his patrol car into the oncoming vehicle. The impact disabled the suspect’s car and prevented it from reaching unsuspecting motorists.

Authorities reported that while Lee’s patrol car was totaled, he walked away from the collision without major injuries. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

To honor his actions, South Carolina Department of Public Safety Director Robert Woods and Highway Patrol Colonel Christopher Williamson presented Lee with a Medal of Valor, plaque, and new patrol vehicle. Law enforcement officials from the State Law Enforcement Division and the South Carolina Department of Transportation also attended the ceremony. Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey publicly commended Lee for what he called a courageous and life-saving decision.
