Columbia, South Carolina – Storms return to the Midlands Thursday morning, threatening a soggy start for drivers, students, and commuters across central South Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected to develop across Columbia and surrounding counties before 10 a.m. Thursday, June 5. Rain chances increase sharply after 4 a.m., with light winds and rainfall totals between a quarter and half an inch expected. Flash flooding isn’t currently forecast, but low-lying and poorly drained areas could see brief ponding on roads including I-26 and I-20.

Conditions improve by Thursday afternoon with highs near 81°F and partly cloudy skies by evening. Motorists should give themselves extra time for morning travel and keep headlights on during active downpours. The South Carolina Department of Transportation urges caution on ramps and bridges, where water tends to collect first.

Friday brings a slight chance of afternoon storms, with highs rising to 91°F. Saturday could be the hottest day of the stretch, with Columbia pushing 94°F under steamy, stormy conditions. Expect on-and-off thunderstorm chances through early next week.
