Charleston, S.C. – Isolated severe thunderstorms could hammer the Lowcountry and parts of Southeast Georgia this afternoon, with damaging winds, hail up to 1.25 inches, and intense lightning expected between 3 and 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, confidence is high that storms will develop across the region today, particularly from Savannah and Statesboro to Walterboro, Summerville, and Charleston. The greatest risk window spans from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., with peak activity near Beaufort, Hilton Head, and coastal areas between 4 and 6 p.m.

Power outages, tree damage, and minor flooding in low-lying areas are possible. Residents are urged to avoid travel during heavy downpours, never drive through flooded roads, and stay indoors during lightning. NWS also warns of potential impacts to evening commutes and advises monitoring NOAA weather radio or mobile alerts.

This system could bring the strongest storms the region has seen since early summer. More showers and embedded thunderstorms may persist into the evening hours. Additional alerts may be issued as the system moves eastward. Stay weather aware and ready to take shelter quickly.
