Columbia, SC – Scattered thunderstorms are expected across South Carolina this afternoon and into tonight, with some storms potentially becoming severe, bringing damaging winds and frequent lightning. The highest chance for stronger storms is in the northern Midlands and extending into the PeeDee region.

According to the US National Weather Service Columbia South Carolina, a cold front is moving through the area, prompting a Threat Level 1 out of 5 (Marginal Risk) for isolated severe thunderstorms. The primary threats include damaging winds and frequent lightning, with small hail also possible. These storms are anticipated between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Residents in areas like Lancaster and Cheraw, within the PeeDee, should be particularly vigilant. While Columbia and surrounding areas in the Midlands are also at risk, the northern sections face the greatest potential for severe weather. It is crucial for everyone to stay weather aware and have at least two ways to receive NWS warnings. Power outages could occur due to strong winds, so ensure mobile devices are charged.

The National Weather Service advises avoiding outdoor activities during the storm’s peak hours. Drivers should be prepared for sudden downpours and reduced visibility. Warnings remain in effect through Thursday evening, and additional advisories may be issued as the situation evolves.
