Charleston, South Carolina – Residents across coastal South Carolina and parts of southeast Georgia could experience strong to severe thunderstorms starting as early as 3 p.m. today. These storms carry a risk of damaging straight-line winds and localized heavy rainfall, potentially impacting travel and power.

According to the US National Weather Service Charleston SC, a sea breeze moving inland after hot, humid conditions will be the primary trigger for these storms. The highest threat for isolated strong to severe thunderstorms is along and north of the I-16 corridor, including areas like Moncks Corner, Summerville, and Charleston, extending west towards Statesboro and Sylvania in Georgia. The timing for these hazards is between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Authorities advise having multiple ways to receive weather warnings. Property owners should bring loose outdoor items inside to prevent them from becoming projectiles in strong winds. Watch for downed trees and power lines, and report any outages to local utility providers. While the immediate threat is wind and heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning is also a significant hazard.

The National Weather Service continues to monitor conditions, and additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the afternoon progresses. Remain weather aware and prepared for rapidly changing conditions through the evening.
