York County, SC – The York County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to stay alert behind the wheel as part of Drowsy Driving Awareness Week, running November 1–5 across South Carolina.
According to deputies, drowsy driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence, causing slower reaction times, poor judgment, and thousands of crashes nationwide each year. The campaign, aligned with South Carolina’s #TargetZero initiative, encourages motorists to get enough sleep and avoid driving when fatigued.
“It’s OK to change your plans if you’re too tired to drive,” the sheriff’s office said in a public advisory. “Call a rideshare, taxi, or friend instead — it could save a life.”
Officials also emphasized that being alert and awake in the driver’s seat is essential for safe travel, particularly during early morning commutes and late-night shifts when fatigue-related crashes are more common.
Residents are encouraged to share the message and help raise awareness about the risks of drowsy driving throughout the week.
