Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina’s Memorial Day weekend will start off dry, but afternoon plans could get washed out by Sunday as scattered thunderstorms move in across much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, Friday and Saturday will be mostly sunny with highs in the mid-80s, but a pattern shift Sunday brings a 35 to 55 percent chance of afternoon storms, especially in central and eastern counties. Rain and thunder will remain a threat through Monday evening, with highs hovering around 86 degrees.

In Columbia, Lexington, and Sumter, Sunday’s storm chances increase after 2 p.m., potentially affecting barbecues, parades, and outdoor events. Charleston and Myrtle Beach may see brief downpours late in the day, while the Upstate—including Greenville and Spartanburg—could stay drier but still face isolated showers.

Drivers should watch for slick roads during late-day travel and avoid flooded areas. Officials advise charging phones, checking local alerts, and having backup indoor plans for the holiday.

Storm chances will linger into Monday, but clearer skies are expected by Tuesday. Stay tuned for updated advisories as new weather models arrive over the weekend.
