Lexington, SC – Eighteen people, including 12 children, were reportedly struck by lightning Tuesday afternoon while visiting Lake Murray Public Park in Lexington, South Carolina.
According to the National Weather Service office in Columbia, the incident occurred around 4:43 p.m. near the Lake Murray Dam. Reports from the South Carolina Emergency Management Division confirmed that six adults and a dozen children were impacted as storms moved through the area. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
Emergency officials say the lightning strike happened during a period of active thunderstorms, catching visitors off guard as they were near or in the water. Ground-based lightning detection confirmed the timing and location of the strike.
Authorities are reminding the public that water is a strong conductor of electricity, and even distant storms can pose a serious threat. Safety officials urge residents and visitors to seek immediate shelter indoors or in vehicles if thunder is heard, regardless of visible lightning.
Lake Murray is a popular destination for boating, swimming, and family recreation, especially during summer months. As of Wednesday, no closures or restrictions at the park have been announced, though local officials continue to monitor weather conditions in the region.
The incident highlights the ongoing importance of public awareness regarding storm safety during Lightning Safety Awareness Week.
