Columbia, S.C. – Scattered thunderstorms could interrupt weekend plans in the Midlands Saturday afternoon before dangerous heat pushes back into South Carolina through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, storm chances rise after 2 p.m. Saturday, with brief downpours and lightning possible. Temperatures will peak near 92 degrees, but humidity will push the heat index close to 100. Rainfall amounts are expected to remain light, though isolated storms could bring higher totals.

Sunday will bring little relief, with sunshine driving highs to 93 and heat index values again approaching 100. Monday is forecast to be even hotter, topping out near 95 under mostly sunny skies. Overnight lows will only drop into the low-to-mid 70s, limiting recovery from the daytime heat.

Residents should limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and seek air-conditioned spaces where possible. Drivers should also be alert for sudden heavy rain Saturday, especially along I-26 and I-20 corridors.

The next organized chance of rain returns Thursday, but until then, heat remains the main concern. Weather advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
