Charleston, S.C. – Scorching temperatures are baking South Carolina today, with highs climbing into the mid-90s and heat indices pushing well beyond 100°F in parts of the state, triggering moderate to major heat risks through Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a large swath of eastern South Carolina is under elevated heat risk until 9 p.m. Friday, with the highest danger zones centered on Columbia, Orangeburg, and Florence. The heat index could exceed 108°F in some areas. A few isolated thunderstorms could develop along the sea breeze near the coast, especially this afternoon.

Charleston and the Lowcountry remain under a Level 2 (orange) alert, meaning those with outdoor plans should hydrate frequently, take breaks in the shade, and avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours. Major heat risks (Level 3 red) are flagged for parts of the Midlands, including Sumter and Orangeburg.

Cooling centers are open in multiple counties, and utility crews are on standby in case of heat-related outages. Residents are urged to check on elderly neighbors and pets, and avoid leaving children in vehicles for any duration.

Temperatures are expected to rise even further Saturday and Sunday, with new advisories likely. Stay tuned for updated alerts through the weekend.
