Columbia, S.C. – Summer heat is returning to the Midlands today, with heat index values expected to climb into the upper 90s to lower 100s, according to the National Weather Service in Columbia. After several days of cooler, wetter weather, high humidity levels are combining with rising temperatures to create a muggy and potentially dangerous afternoon.
Forecasters report that the highest heat index readings, ranging from 100° to 105°, are likely in areas including Columbia, Orangeburg, and Sumter during peak afternoon hours. While these values remain below official advisory criteria, the NWS urges residents to limit strenuous outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, and wear light-colored clothing to avoid heat-related illness.
Newberry, Lexington, and Aiken counties could also see feels-like temperatures over 100°, especially between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Outdoor workers, athletes, and vulnerable residents are advised to take extra breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
The heat is expected to persist through midweek before temperatures ease slightly with increased rain chances by the weekend.
