Columbia, South Carolina – Dangerous heat and powerful storms are converging across South Carolina today, with temperatures soaring and thunderstorms expected to strike by evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday as heat indices climb to 105–110 degrees. Peak danger is expected during the afternoon when humidity and air temperatures combine for extreme conditions, especially across the Midlands, including Columbia, Aiken, Orangeburg, and Sumter.

In addition to the oppressive heat, severe thunderstorms are possible from mid to late afternoon into the evening, capable of producing damaging wind gusts and hail. Counties at heightened risk include Lexington, Richland, Newberry, and Kershaw. The NWS warns residents to prepare for sudden power outages and recommends having multiple ways to receive emergency alerts.

If power fails, stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary travel, and use cool, shaded spaces to manage heat risk. This dual threat of heat and storms is unusual even for late June and may strain power grids and emergency services.

Storm warnings may be issued later today as conditions evolve. Residents should stay alert and avoid outdoor exposure during peak heat hours.
