Charleston, South Carolina – Dangerous heat will grip South Carolina’s Lowcountry through Friday, with heat index values reaching as high as 105°F, raising health concerns for vulnerable populations.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, temperatures will sharply rise beginning Thursday, with the most intense heat expected Friday afternoon. The heat index—a measure of temperature and humidity—could climb between 97°F and 105°F in coastal and inland counties including Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, and Beaufort.
Cities like Summerville, Goose Creek, and Mount Pleasant could see the highest heat stress, especially during peak daylight hours. Officials warn that heat-related illness is possible for those without access to air conditioning or who are working outdoors for extended periods.
Residents are urged to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day. Employers should consider shifting outdoor work to early morning or evening hours.
This level of heat is more typical for mid-summer and comes unusually early for May. While no excessive heat warnings have been issued yet, more advisories could follow if temperatures remain elevated into the weekend.
