Columbia, South Carolina – A dangerous heat wave is gripping South Carolina’s Midlands and CSRA today, with heat index values soaring between 105°F and 110°F through 8 p.m. Tuesday. Daytime highs are expected to reach 102°F, making outdoor conditions hazardous for anyone without access to shade or air conditioning.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, the chance of rain today remains low—under 20 percent—but the heat will linger into Wednesday. A higher risk for showers and thunderstorms is forecast midweek, with a few storms potentially turning strong to severe. Damaging downburst winds are the main concern with these cells.

Residents in Columbia, Aiken, and Orangeburg are urged to take precautions against heat illness: drink water regularly, wear lightweight clothing, and limit time outside during peak heat. Road crews, athletes, and those without reliable cooling should be especially cautious.

With heat indices this extreme, pets and children should never be left in vehicles, even briefly.

The heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Additional storm alerts may be issued by Wednesday morning.
