Charleston, South Carolina – Unseasonable warmth is locking in across the Southeast, pushing March temperatures toward record territory in both Charleston and Savannah as the month winds down.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, March 2026 is on track to rank among the top five warmest on record at both Charleston International Airport and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Average high temperatures are running about 5 degrees above normal, with Charleston nearing a monthly mean max temperature of 76.9°F, placing it in the top three historically.
Savannah is also trending unusually warm, with an average near 77.6°F, ranking within the top five warmest March periods ever recorded. Historical data shows only a few years, including 2020 and 1945, have reached higher averages.
The persistent warmth has extended across coastal South Carolina and southeast Georgia, impacting cities like Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, and Pooler. Elevated temperatures this early in the season can accelerate pollen levels and increase early-season mosquito activity.
Residents should stay hydrated during afternoon warmth and remain mindful of increasing allergens. While no immediate hazards are expected, the unusual heat signals a broader warming trend heading into April.
Above-normal temperatures are expected to continue through the final days of March, with records still within reach before the month officially ends.
