Charleston, SC – A fire danger statement remains in effect across southeast Georgia and southern South Carolina through 8 p.m. Saturday, as gusty winds and critically low humidity levels increase wildfire risk across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a combination of dry fuels, relative humidity levels between 20 and 30 percent, and westerly winds of 10 to 20 mph—gusting up to 25 mph—could lead to erratic fire behavior. This warning impacts counties including Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, McIntosh, and Effingham in Georgia, and Colleton, Dorchester, Charleston, Jasper, and Beaufort in South Carolina.
Authorities urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and check with local officials regarding burn restrictions. Even small flames may spread rapidly under current conditions, posing threats to nearby homes and wooded areas.
The elevated fire risk is not uncommon in early spring, when vegetation remains dry and windy fronts sweep through the region. Emergency managers advise using caution with grills, fire pits, and discarded smoking materials.
Anyone who sees smoke or fire is encouraged to report it immediately to local fire services. Weather conditions are expected to improve overnight as humidity levels rise and winds calm.
