Columbia, South Carolina – Scorching temperatures and life-threatening heat index values will grip much of central South Carolina on Monday, July 28th, with Columbia and surrounding counties facing peak danger between 2 and 5 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, an Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect through Monday evening, with forecasted heat index values as high as 113°F. A Heat Advisory is also in place starting at 10 a.m. Monday, spanning across Richland, Lexington, and Newberry counties. Officials warn that exposure to these conditions can cause heat stroke and severe dehydration in minutes.

Residents are urged to stay indoors with air conditioning, drink fluids frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Anyone without access to cooling should seek relief at designated cooling centers. Children and pets must never be left in vehicles, even briefly.

Road crews and outdoor workers should schedule breaks and monitor for signs of heat exhaustion. Light-colored clothing and early morning tasks are recommended to reduce exposure. Travel on I-26 and U.S. Route 1 may also be impacted by extreme road surface temperatures.
