Bamberg, S.C. – Thunderstorms swept across central South Carolina late Monday, sending water rushing over roads and threatening homes in Bamberg, southeastern Barnwell, and west central Orangeburg counties until 9:15 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, radar showed up to 3 inches of rain falling across the area by 6:17 p.m., with heavy rainfall rates of up to 1.5 inches per hour likely through the evening. Additional downpours may push totals even higher, raising the risk of sudden flash flooding in low-lying neighborhoods, small creeks, and along highways including U.S. 301, U.S. 78, and SC-64.
Cities most at risk include Bamberg, Denmark, Blackville, Ehrhardt, Hilda, Neeses, Norway, Olar, Kline, Cope, Govan, and the area near Bamberg County Airport. Flooding is already reported on area streets, with water pooling quickly near Rivers Bridge State Park and local underpasses.
Emergency officials urge residents to avoid travel, especially after dark, and never drive through flooded roadways. “Turn around, don’t drown,” remains in effect for all local drivers. Residents should prepare for possible power outages and have a plan to move to higher ground if needed.
