Columbia, SC – A heightened fire danger warning is in effect across the Midlands and Central Savannah River Area through 8 p.m. today as dry and windy conditions increase the likelihood of wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service Columbia, the combination of wind gusts reaching 25 mph and relative humidity dropping between 15 to 25 percent is creating conditions ripe for fire spread. These weather patterns have prompted the South Carolina Forestry Commission to issue a statewide burn ban to discourage outdoor burning.
The advisory highlights the potential for fires to start and spread rapidly under these atmospheric conditions. Residents in Columbia, Aiken, Orangeburg, and surrounding counties are strongly urged to refrain from any open burning activities, including debris burning, fire pits, and outdoor grilling.
Officials emphasize that even small sparks can escalate into large wildfires under the current environment. The public is advised to secure flammable materials, monitor local emergency alerts, and report any signs of smoke or fire to 911 immediately.
This elevated fire danger is not uncommon during early spring in South Carolina, especially when dry air masses coincide with breezy conditions. Fire officials are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed throughout the day.
