Columbia, SC – South Carolina residents should prepare for hot and humid conditions through the end of the week, with high temperatures reaching the mid to upper 90s and heat indices soaring well over 100 degrees. The National Weather Service (NWS) Columbia South Carolina has issued a weather alert, warning of isolated severe thunderstorms expected this evening into tonight.
According to the NWS, maximum temperatures in cities like Columbia, Augusta, and Sumter are forecasted to range from 94 to 98 degrees. The heatwave is predicted to persist, with temperatures peaking at 97 degrees on Thursday and Friday. This oppressive heat combined with high humidity will result in heat indices exceeding 100 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for prolonged outdoor activities.
Isolated severe thunderstorms pose an additional threat, particularly in the evening and overnight hours. The NWS advises residents to stay informed about weather updates and take precautions against heat-related illnesses by staying hydrated and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
Looking ahead, the forecast shows a slight relief over the weekend, with temperatures dropping to the lower 90s by Saturday and Sunday, but still remaining significantly high. There is a 35% chance of rain on Saturday and a 45% chance on Sunday, offering some respite from the heat.
