Columbia, SC – South Carolina residents are being reminded to stay earthquake-ready this week as new USGS data shows 50 tremors have struck the state over the past 12 months — the strongest measuring magnitude 3.0 near Coronaca in Greenwood County on August 22, 2025.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, most recent activity has centered around Coronaca and Parksville, with magnitudes generally between 1.5 and 3.0. The latest quake, a M2.2, occurred 3 km northwest of Coronaca on September 26, 2025, at a shallow depth of 0.0 km.

The National Weather Service Charleston announced that October 12–18 is Earthquake Preparedness Week in South Carolina. As part of the effort, residents are encouraged to participate in the Great ShakeOut drill on Thursday, October 17, at 10:16 a.m., practicing the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” method for earthquake safety.

While no major damage has been reported, state officials stress that South Carolina remains one of the most seismically active areas in the eastern U.S., particularly around the Midlands and western Upstate.

Residents can review safety guidance through the South Carolina Emergency Management Division’s Earthquake Guide and stay alert for tremor updates on the USGS and NWS websites.
