Charleston, S.C. – Drivers along I-26 and U.S. 17 may face wet roads by Friday as thunderstorms return to the Charleston area just in time for the busy Labor Day travel rush. Warm, humid evenings continue until then, but rain chances climb heading into the holiday weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, Tuesday will stay mostly sunny with highs near 88, while Wednesday brings another dry, calm day with highs in the low 80s. By Thursday, isolated storms creep back into the region, and by Friday, the risk increases to a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms. That could mean delays for coastal travelers and heavier traffic issues during peak holiday travel times.

Charleston County officials urge drivers to stay alert for sudden downpours, especially on heavily traveled routes like I-26 toward Columbia and U.S. 17 through Mount Pleasant. Evening commuters should allow extra time in case of slick conditions and slower traffic. With heavy rain possible in short bursts, localized street flooding in low-lying neighborhoods remains a concern.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, check drainage around their homes, and monitor weather updates closely. Power outages become more likely if storms intensify by late week. Holiday plans at the beach may also be affected if storms linger into the weekend.

Unsettled weather could remain in place into Labor Day, though confidence in exact timing is still low. More updates are expected midweek.
