Charleston, S.C. – Dangerous surf is expected to keep swimmers and surfers at risk along South Carolina’s beaches through Thursday, with officials urging caution from Beaufort to Charleston. Waves up to 5 feet are breaking in the surf zone, creating hazardous conditions and raising the threat of rip currents.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. Thursday, while a High Rip Current Risk remains in place through this evening. Forecasters warn that even strong swimmers could be pulled into deeper waters.

Beachgoers in Charleston, Folly Beach, Hilton Head, and Edisto Island are urged to avoid swimming unless near a staffed lifeguard stand. Local officials say inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the ocean altogether. The conditions may also contribute to localized beach erosion, especially during high tide.

Surfers are being cautioned about strong currents and powerful shore breaks, while emergency crews remain on alert for water rescues. The NWS advises those caught in a rip current to stay calm, float, and swim parallel to shore until able to break free.

Hazardous surf and rip currents are expected to ease by Friday, but warnings remain in effect through Thursday evening.
