CHARLESTON, S.C. – Swimmers and surfers along South Carolina and Georgia beaches face dangerous conditions through Thursday as a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Risk remain in effect. Waves could build up to 6 feet, creating treacherous surf and powerful currents capable of pulling even experienced swimmers offshore.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the High Surf Advisory will stay in place until 8 p.m. Thursday, while the rip current risk remains in effect through tonight. Officials warn that beach erosion and dangerous water conditions are likely, particularly along barrier island beaches and popular tourist spots such as Folly Beach, Hilton Head, and Tybee Island in Georgia.

Lifeguards are urging visitors to stay near guarded beaches and avoid swimming alone. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water entirely. Safety experts advise floating and swimming parallel to the shore if caught in a rip current, rather than attempting to fight against the pull.

The most dangerous conditions are expected during the afternoon and evening high tides, coinciding with peak beach traffic. Officials caution that additional statements or advisories may follow if surf remains elevated into the weekend.
