South Bend, IN – The South Bend Police Department has addressed speculation surrounding the death of an individual found in a tent Sunday, confirming the cause was not hypothermia.

Officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of E. Northside Boulevard for a welfare check and discovered the person deceased inside a tent. According to the St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office, the death was determined to be the result of a medical event, not exposure to cold weather.

The department stated that out of respect for the family, no additional information about the individual would be released. Authorities also emphasized they have received no reports of other recent weather-related deaths in the city.

Police noted that they have been actively assisting those in need by providing information about local warming centers and shelters and transporting individuals to safety when necessary.
