South Bend, IN – Drivers in St. Joseph County should prepare for major traffic changes starting Tuesday, September 30, as State Road 933/Lincolnway closes for nearly two months.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), Lincolnway will shut down at the intersection with Laurel Street, between Cedar Street and Merrifield Avenue, to allow crews to complete sewer, watermain, and other municipal infrastructure improvements. The project is expected to continue through late November.

A local detour will guide drivers along Church Street/Main Street, McKinley Avenue, and State Road 331/Capital Avenue. INDOT advises through traffic to seek alternate routes to avoid delays.

The closure is expected to cause significant disruptions for commuters traveling between South Bend and Mishawaka, as Lincolnway is a key connector in the area. Residents and businesses near the construction zone may also experience heavier local traffic as drivers adjust to detour routes.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and remain alert when navigating detours. Updates will be provided as work progresses.
