South Bend, Indiana – Dangerous travel conditions are expected to persist across northern Indiana tonight into Thursday morning as intense lake effect snow and blowing snow continue to impact major roadways, including I-80, I-90, and US-31 near South Bend and surrounding communities.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, bands of wind-driven lake effect snow will intensify this evening and overnight, producing rapidly changing conditions. Snow totals will vary sharply over short distances, with 6 to 12 inches possible in warning areas and 2 to 6 inches in advisory zones. Gusty northwest winds will lead to blowing and drifting snow, with near-whiteout visibility at times.

The most hazardous conditions are expected during the late evening and early morning hours, affecting the Wednesday night and Thursday morning commutes. Slick, snow-covered roads and sudden visibility drops are likely along I-80, I-90, State Road 2, and US-20, particularly in St. Joseph, LaPorte, and Porter counties. Indiana State Police are urging drivers to delay travel if possible and to use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.

Snow bands are expected to gradually weaken late Thursday morning, but lingering slick spots will remain on untreated roads and elevated surfaces. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect through Thursday afternoon, and additional travel advisories could be issued if snow bands persist longer than expected.
