South Bend, Indiana – The calendar year 2025 was a standout for weather extremes in northern Indiana, with South Bend breaking or tying 15 daily climate records across temperature, rainfall, and snowfall, highlighting a year marked by sharp contrasts and unusual timing.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, South Bend tied or set nine temperature records in 2025, including one record high temperature, five record warm low temperatures, and three record low temperatures. Several of the warm overnight records occurred on consecutive nights in mid to late June, underscoring how persistent nighttime heat played a major role during the summer.

Precipitation also made its mark. The city logged six daily precipitation records, including four rainfall records and two snowfall records. Notably, both snowfall records were set early in the cold season during November, an unusually early signal of winter impacts. One of the most significant events occurred on December 28, when South Bend recorded its highest daily rainfall total since June of 2021, setting a new daily precipitation record.

The mix of warm lows, early snow, and heavy late-year rainfall reflects a year of pronounced variability for northern Indiana. Weather officials note that such swings can strain infrastructure, agriculture, and travel planning, even when individual events are brief.

Climate records in South Bend stretch back more than a century, placing 2025 among years remembered not for one dominant pattern, but for repeated extremes. Forecasters say additional climate summaries will continue to refine how 2025 fits into longer-term trends across northern Indiana.
