South Bend, Indiana — Severe storms Tuesday evening could bring tornadoes, large hail and flooding across northern Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the region is under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather on Tuesday, March 10, with storms expected to develop during the evening hours and continue overnight into Wednesday morning.

Forecasters say scattered supercells could form as early as 5 p.m. EDT, initially posing threats for tornadoes and hail up to 2 inches in diameter. The greatest window for severe storms is expected between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The strongest storm potential appears west of Indiana State Road 15, including areas near Plymouth, La Porte, Rensselaer and Monticello, though severe storms remain possible across much of northern Indiana, including South Bend, Warsaw and Fort Wayne.

As storms evolve overnight, the main threats may shift toward damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall.

The weather service also warns of widespread rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches, with localized totals approaching 3 inches. Rainfall rates could exceed 0.5 to 1 inch per hour, increasing the risk of urban street flooding, ponding on roads and rising rivers.

Flash flooding may be most likely along and west of Interstate 69, according to the NWS outlook. Low-lying areas and flood-prone roadways could see water accumulation late Tuesday night into early Wednesday.

Drivers encountering flooded roads are urged to turn around rather than attempt to drive through water, the weather service said.

Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and ensure their safe shelter location is accessible before storms develop.

For students, commuters and overnight workers, storms may impact late-night travel and early Wednesday morning commutes across the region.
