South Bend, IN – Firefighters in South Bend were busy overnight, responding to two major fires that caused significant damage but resulted in no injuries.

It all began before midnight, when fire crews were dispatched to the 700 block of Johnson Street to address a working fire in a one-story house. Upon arrival, firefighters found flames on the exterior of the house, spreading to the attic. Crews attacked the fire from the Charlie side, where the fire was most intense. They managed to get the blaze under control after roughly thirty minutes, with primary and secondary searches yielding no injuries.

According to the South Bend Fire Department, at 2:06 a.m., another fire broke out at a vacant two-story house in the 2200 block of Bertrand Street, near the intersection of Bertrand and Huey Streets. Engine 4 reported heavy fire conditions throughout the structure. Due to the building’s compromised structural integrity from a previous fire last year, crews adopted a defensive strategy to manage the blaze safely. The fire was eventually contained, and no injuries were reported.

Both incidents are currently under investigation to determine the cause of the fires.
