Northern Indiana will see accumulating system snow this afternoon followed by a round of lake effect snow tonight into Sunday morning, according to a Saturday update from the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana. The agency also warned of sharply colder temperatures and wind chills that could fall to between –5 and –20 degrees, especially south of U.S. 30.
The Weather Service reports that 1 to 4 inches of system snow is expected through early evening, with the highest totals generally south of Lafayette, Monticello and Peru. A transition to lake effect bands is expected after 7 p.m., bringing an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow into Sunday morning. Localized blowing and drifting snow may occur where gusty winds align with heavier bands.
Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for parts of northern and central Indiana, including counties near Lafayette, Monticello, Kokomo, Muncie and Indianapolis. A Cold Weather Advisory covers a broad area of northern Indiana tonight and early Sunday as temperatures drop to around 0 degrees.
Wind chills are forecast to reach –5 to –10 degrees across many locations, with readings as low as –15 to –20 degrees in portions of the region, particularly south of U.S. 30. Maps released by the Weather Service show the coldest values overnight and again Sunday night into Monday morning.
Travel conditions may deteriorate this evening as fresh accumulation combines with wind-driven snow and falling temperatures. The Weather Service advises residents to monitor updates and use caution if traveling late today or overnight.
This weather pattern follows a surge of colder air spreading across the Midwest behind a departing system. Additional guidance will be issued as conditions evolve.
