South Bend, IN – A two-part winter system will bring accumulating snow followed by bitter cold across northern Indiana over the next several days, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Northern Indiana. System snow begins this evening before transitioning to lake effect snow overnight and into Tuesday morning.

Forecasters say 1 to 4 inches of total snow is likely across the region, with the highest amounts closer to Lake Michigan. Snow is expected to wind down late tonight, but lake effect bands may linger into Tuesday, creating periodic reduced visibility and slick roads.

Highs on Tuesday will range from 24–31°F, with overnight lows dipping into the 19–24°F range.

Cold air settles in more aggressively on Wednesday, with highs only reaching 30–34°F during the day. According to the NWS, a stronger push of Arctic air arrives Wednesday night, sending lows into the 14–19°F range. The cold pattern continues into the end of the week, with temperatures struggling to climb out of the 20s at times.

Communities including South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Goshen, Plymouth, La Porte, and Michigan City should prepare for changing road conditions tonight and early Tuesday as snow transitions to lake effect.

The NWS urges drivers to slow down, allow extra time, and stay aware of shifting lake effect bands that can cause rapid changes in visibility and road conditions.
