South Bend, Indiana – Dense fog and midweek showers may affect travel across northern Indiana, with record warmth possible Wednesday.

According to the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, areas of dense fog developed Monday morning before gradually giving way to partly cloudy skies. Afternoon highs Monday are expected to range between 51 and 62 degrees, with southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph.

Forecasters say a mild stretch will continue through midweek, with Wednesday shaping up as the warmest day. High temperatures are forecast to reach 56 to 68 degrees across the region, approaching daily record levels in some cities including South Bend and Fort Wayne.

Rain chances increase late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Showers are expected to be scattered to numerous during the morning hours before gradually clearing later Wednesday. Overnight temperatures Tuesday are projected between 41 and 52 degrees.

Drivers along US-31, Interstate 80/90, Interstate 69, and US-20 could encounter reduced visibility during periods of fog or brief ponding on roadways during heavier showers. While widespread flooding is not anticipated, wet pavement and fluctuating visibility may slow travel during peak commute hours.

By late week, temperatures are expected to cool back toward seasonal averages heading into the weekend.

The midweek warmth may be notable for students, early-season outdoor workers, and commuters traveling during morning rain periods.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts for timing adjustments as rain chances develop.
