Cold weather will persist across northern Indiana through the end of the week, with subzero wind chills and continued light lake-effect snow affecting areas near the Indiana Toll Road.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, daytime highs will remain in the teens, while morning wind chill values drop below zero each day. The coldest conditions are expected during the early morning hours, when wind chills may range from 10 to 20 degrees below zero, increasing the risk of frostbite for anyone exposed outdoors.
In addition to the cold, light lake-effect snow will continue for areas along and north of the Indiana Toll Road, including communities near South Bend, Elkhart, LaPorte, and Michigan City. Daily snowfall accumulations are expected to remain around an inch or less, but even light snow may lead to slick spots on untreated roads, particularly during overnight and early morning periods.
Travel along I-90 (Indiana Toll Road), I-94, I-80/94, and I-69 could be briefly impacted as snow showers move through. Visibility reductions are expected to be localized, but conditions may change quickly under passing lake-effect bands. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and remain alert, especially on bridges and exposed stretches of roadway.
The National Weather Service advises residents to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors during the coldest periods. Frostbite can occur in a short amount of time when wind chills fall below zero. Motorists should also ensure vehicles are winter-ready and carry emergency supplies in case of delays.
Cold conditions are expected to continue into Friday, with little relief during the overnight hours. Some moderation is possible beyond the weekend, but winter weather hazards remain a concern for now.
Residents should continue monitoring forecast updates as lake-effect snow placement and wind chill values may fluctuate slightly day to day.
