South Bend, IN – Drivers along US-30 and I-80 have just hours before a late-day cold front triggers scattered snow showers that could coat pavement before midnight Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a 40 to 50 percent chance of light snow develops this evening, mainly along and north of US-30 from La Porte through South Bend to Fort Wayne. Snowfall totals are expected to remain light, generally under 1 inch, but bursts of snow could briefly reduce visibility and create slick travel between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Temperatures will fall into the 25 to 32 degree range overnight, allowing untreated roads and bridges to freeze quickly. Along I-94 and US-31 in St. Joseph and Elkhart counties, pavement temperatures near freezing may support patchy accumulation, especially on elevated ramps and overpasses.
Farther south toward Plymouth and Warsaw, precipitation will be more scattered, but refreezing remains possible as colder air settles in before daybreak Wednesday. INDOT crews are expected to monitor primary corridors, including the Indiana Toll Road and I-69, for isolated slick spots.
Conditions improve by midmorning Wednesday as drier air moves in, followed by a warming trend into late week. Highs are projected to climb into the upper 40s and even mid-50s by Friday, melting any leftover snow.
Motorists traveling Tuesday night should slow down, increase following distance and watch for sudden visibility drops in heavier snow bursts. Additional updates are possible if snow coverage expands farther south overnight.
