South Bend, Ind. – A sharp temperature swing and a burst of light snow could create slick stretches on I-80 and US-31 by Saturday night, especially north of US-30 where up to 1 inch of accumulation is possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, dry and breezy conditions will push highs well into the 50s and lower 60s Friday, offering a brief taste of spring across much of the state. Southwest winds will increase through the afternoon, aiding the warmup from Fort Wayne to South Bend and Elkhart.
That warmth will not last. A cold front will sweep through Saturday afternoon into Saturday night, knocking temperatures down into the 20s by late evening. Rain may briefly mix with snow before transitioning to light snow, with the best chance for measurable accumulation north of US-30, including St. Joseph, LaPorte and Berrien counties. A coating to 1 inch could develop on grassy surfaces and untreated roads after 7 p.m.
Drivers along I-94, I-69 and the Indiana Toll Road should prepare for changing conditions Saturday night as pavement temperatures fall quickly. Even minor accumulation could produce slick overpasses and reduced visibility in heavier bursts.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items during Friday’s breezy conditions and monitor road updates before traveling Saturday night. Additional advisories may be issued as the cold front approaches and snow chances become more defined heading into the weekend.
