South Bend, Indiana – Drivers along the Indiana Toll Road and I-80/90 should prepare for scattered slick spots after 2 p.m. Saturday as light snow develops north of U.S. 30 and temperatures fall through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, cooler air is filtering into the region, setting the stage for scattered light snow showers through the afternoon and evening. Areas north of the Toll Road, including South Bend and Elkhart, could see up to 1 inch of accumulation before precipitation tapers off late tonight.
South of U.S. 30, including Warsaw and parts of Kosciusko County, snow may mix with rain at times. Surface temperatures hovering in the mid-30s could limit accumulation on main roads, but untreated secondary streets and bridges may still become slick after sunset as readings dip into the 20s.
In Fort Wayne and along I-69, any snow that falls is expected to remain light and spotty. Still, bursts of snow could briefly reduce visibility during the late afternoon drive. INDOT crews will monitor conditions, especially along elevated ramps and overpasses where freezing occurs first.
Skies begin to clear Sunday with highs in the lower to mid-30s, but another weak chance for light snow may brush areas south of U.S. 30 Sunday night. Drivers should reduce speed during snow showers, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 Indiana for updated road conditions. Additional updates may follow if snowfall becomes more widespread Saturday evening.
