South Bend, IN – Near-whiteout conditions developed across parts of South Bend early Friday evening, prompting warnings from police as snow began to rapidly accumulate on city streets.
According to the South Bend Police Department, officers began observing “near-whiteout conditions” around 6:10 p.m. as snow intensified across the area. The department said several crashes were reported citywide as roads turned slick and visibility dropped sharply.
Officers noted that vehicles were having trouble navigating certain areas, including southbound Ironwood Drive from Ewing Avenue, where traction and visibility were particularly poor. Photos shared by the department showed snow sticking to street signs and reducing visibility for drivers.
Police urged residents to slow down, increase following distance, and use caution while traveling Friday night. The department also reminded drivers to keep headlights on and clear snow from windshields before heading out.
As temperatures continue to fall this evening, icy conditions are expected to worsen across St. Joseph County. Drivers are encouraged to delay travel if possible until road crews have treated major routes.
