South Bend, Indiana – A cold front moving through northern Indiana today will bring rain changing to snow, with accumulating snow expected overnight into Sunday, according to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office.

Forecasters say temperatures today will range between 37 and 44 degrees, allowing rain to fall across much of the region. However, rain may mix with snow north of U.S. 24 as colder air begins to move in behind the front. While little impact is expected during the daytime hours, conditions will change noticeably after sunset.

Tonight, temperatures are forecast to drop into the low to mid-20s, allowing precipitation to transition fully to snow. The National Weather Service expects snow showers to develop overnight, with total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches possible, mainly across southwest Michigan and nearby northern Indiana counties. The highest probabilities for accumulation—around 80 percent—are focused in southwest Michigan.

On Sunday, lake-effect snow showers may linger into the morning hours, adding up to an additional inch of snow in localized areas before tapering off by afternoon. High temperatures Sunday are expected to range between 30 and 35 degrees, keeping any snow that falls from melting quickly.

While snowfall amounts are not expected to be extreme, slick roads and brief reductions in visibility are possible, particularly during overnight and early morning travel. Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for changing conditions.

For commuters, students, and weekend travelers in the South Bend area, the most impactful period will be late Saturday night through early Sunday morning, when snow is most likely to accumulate.

Conditions are expected to improve later Sunday afternoon as snow showers diminish and clouds gradually break. Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates at weather.gov/iwx, especially if traveling overnight or early Sunday.
