South Bend, IN – A 41-year-old man has been arrested and charged following a violent incident that prompted a large police response and a shelter-in-place alert at Indiana University South Bend on Monday night.

According to the South Bend Police Department, officers responded around 8 p.m. on September 22 to the 1000 block of S. 23rd Street after reports of a domestic disturbance. A witness told police that the suspect, identified as Erick Hordos, allegedly fired a shotgun into the ground after a dispute with a woman. The witness also reported that Hordos pointed the firearm at him before driving away.

Police said a short time later, a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s car crashed near Clover Street and Northside Boulevard. Witnesses reported the driver exited with a shotgun and fired again before fleeing. The incident led IU South Bend to issue a shelter-in-place order as multiple officers searched the area.

Hordos was not located that night but allegedly contacted police the following morning and turned himself in. Officers later recovered the discarded shotgun in the area he described.

Authorities said Hordos sustained injuries in the crash and was treated before being booked into the St. Joseph County Jail. On September 24, prosecutors charged him with intimidation, a Level 5 felony; criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony; and leaving the scene of an accident, a Class B misdemeanor.

Hordos remains in custody. Police reminded the public that all suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
