South Bend, Indiana – A stretch of very cold weather with periodic lake effect snow is expected to impact northern Indiana this week, with dangerous wind chills and hazardous travel conditions developing toward the end of the week.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the upcoming week will remain active, with Wednesday the only day expected to climb above freezing. Light snow is forecast Wednesday, primarily north of U.S. 6, before colder Arctic air overspreads the region.

Beginning Thursday, lake effect snow showers are expected to increase across southwest Michigan and northwest Indiana, including the South Bend area. Snow chances are forecast to continue into Friday and Saturday, accompanied by sharply colder temperatures.

High temperatures in South Bend are expected to fall into the single digits Friday, with overnight lows dropping below zero. The NWS warns that wind chills could reach -15 to -25 degrees, especially during nighttime and early morning hours, creating a risk of frostbite with prolonged exposure.

Periods of lake effect snow could lead to slick and snow-covered roads, particularly on Interstate 80/90 (Indiana Toll Road), U.S. 31, U.S. 20, and State Road 23. Travel impacts are most likely during overnight hours and morning commutes, when visibility may be reduced and untreated roadways become icy.

The National Weather Service urges residents to prepare for a frigid end to the week, monitor forecast updates, and limit time outdoors during extreme cold. Drivers should allow extra travel time and carry winter safety supplies if commuting during snow showers.

Students, workers, and early-morning commuters in the South Bend area should remain alert for changing road conditions and dangerously cold wind chills through the weekend.
