South Bend, IN – As the holiday season winds down, South Bend fire officials are warning residents that real Christmas trees can quickly become a serious fire hazard once they dry out — sometimes igniting in just seconds.

According to the South Bend Fire Department, most real Christmas trees last only three to five weeks after being cut. Once a tree stops absorbing water, it dries rapidly, increasing the risk of fast-moving house fires.

Fire officials urge residents to water live trees daily, unplug holiday lights when leaving home, and keep trees well away from heat sources such as space heaters, fireplaces, and radiators. Once needles begin falling or branches become brittle, the department says the tree should be removed immediately.

To help reduce fire risk, free curbside Christmas tree recycling will be available to South Bend residents from January 5 through January 29, taking place on each household’s regular trash pickup day. Residents must remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, and decorations before placing trees at the curb.

Those who need assistance can also schedule a pickup by visiting southbendin.gov/treepickup or by calling 311, according to city officials.

Christmas tree fires are most common in January, when dried-out trees remain indoors well past the holidays. Fire departments across Indiana report that tree-related fires can spread faster than most household fires due to how quickly dry pine needles ignite.

Residents in St. Joseph County, the greater South Bend–Mishawaka metro area, and surrounding northern Indiana communities are encouraged to take advantage of the recycling program and remove trees promptly.
