South Bend, IN – Residents living near Marshall Traditional School will see fire crews in their neighborhood Saturday morning as the South Bend Fire Department conducts a Smoke Alarm Canvas from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
According to the department, firefighters and volunteers will visit homes south of Marshall Traditional School to install free smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and inspect existing ones. The outreach aims to increase fire safety awareness and reduce preventable home fire deaths as temperatures drop and heating use rises.
The initiative is part of a collaboration between Lowe’s Home Improvement and the Notre Dame Red Cross Club, both contributing supplies and volunteers to support the event.
Fire officials are asking residents to keep an eye out for crews during the morning hours. “This is about protecting our neighbors,” a department spokesperson said in a post Thursday. “If you live in the canvas area, please allow our teams to help make your home safer.”
Residents who live outside the targeted area can still apply for a free smoke alarm installation through the department’s ongoing program.
The department encourages anyone in the area to spread the word and help ensure that every home has working alarms ahead of the winter season.
