South Bend, IN – Firefighters in South Bend were kept busy late Friday night into early Saturday morning after responding to two residential fires and a carbon monoxide emergency, prompting evacuations but resulting in no reported injuries, according to officials.
According to the South Bend Fire Department, crews were first dispatched just after 8:30 p.m. Friday to the 1200 block of North Eddy Street at Brother’s Bar & Grill after reports of high levels of carbon monoxide inside the business. Firefighters confirmed elevated CO readings upon arrival and requested additional companies due to the large number of patrons inside the bar and apartments located above it.
The building was evacuated as a precaution and fully checked. Officials said no one was transported to the hospital. The source of the carbon monoxide was identified and isolated, and the bar remained closed for the rest of the night.
Later that evening, at approximately 11:30 p.m., fire crews were called to the 400 block of East Chippewa Avenue for a reported residential fire. Smoke was visible when firefighters arrived, and crews located the fire on the first floor of the home. The blaze was brought under control in about 20 minutes. The house was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported.
Just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to another residential fire in the 1200 block of Miner Street after neighbors called 911 upon hearing smoke alarms. Firefighters found smoke coming from a two-story home, with fire located on the first floor and extending to the second. Crews contained the fire within approximately 30 minutes. No one was home at the time, and no injuries were reported.
Officials say both fires remain under investigation.
