Indianapolis, IN – Holiday travelers across Indiana should prepare for a rainy start to Thanksgiving week followed by colder air and scattered snow showers, especially across the northern part of the state, according to new forecast maps from the Weather Prediction Center.
According to the WPC, rain spreads across Indiana early Wednesday, affecting Indianapolis, Muncie, Kokomo, Lafayette, Fort Wayne, South Bend, and Gary. The heaviest rain is expected along the I-65, I-69, and I-70 corridors during the afternoon as millions hit the roads. Wet pavement and reduced visibility may lead to slower travel times statewide.
Colder air arrives Wednesday night into Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 27, 2025). In northern Indiana, especially along I-80/90 from Gary to South Bend, lake-effect snow showers may develop as northwest winds increase behind the system. Light accumulations are possible, mainly near Lake Michigan and across LaPorte, St. Joseph, and Elkhart counties.
Central Indiana, including Indianapolis and surrounding counties, will see colder temperatures with occasional flurries but little accumulation. Highs on Thursday will struggle to reach the upper 30s to near 40.
By Black Friday (November 28, 2025), another surge of cold air sweeps across the state. Northern Indiana may see continued snow showers, particularly in traditional lake-effect zones. Central and southern Indiana remain dry but breezy and cold, with wind chills dipping into the 20s for early shoppers.
Travelers should plan for rainy conditions Wednesday, colder air and light snow Thursday, and continued snow chances Friday in the north, especially near the lake.
