South Bend, IN – Northern Indiana is bracing for its first accumulating snow of the season Sunday night into Monday, with several inches possible near Lake Michigan.
According to the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a wintry mix of rain and snow will develop Sunday, turning to mostly snow Sunday night as colder air moves in. The heaviest accumulations—around 4 inches or more—are expected near Lake Michigan, particularly across La Porte, Porter, and Berrien counties, where lake effect bands could enhance snowfall.
Areas farther inland are expected to see lighter totals, generally around 1 inch or less. The weather service cautions that travel impacts are likely for the Monday morning commute, especially along I-94 and I-90, where visibility could drop quickly in heavier snow showers.
Forecasters note some uncertainty in exactly where the lake effect snow band will set up, which could shift the location of the heaviest totals. Regardless, slick roads and freezing temperatures are expected Monday morning, marking the region’s first real taste of winter.
