Salt Lake City, UT – A powerful winter storm will arrive in northern Utah on Friday night, bringing up to 2 feet of snow to mountain areas and creating hazardous travel conditions through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, an atmospheric river event will bring heavy snowfall to the Wasatch Mountains north of I-80 and the Bear River Range. The heaviest snow is expected Saturday and Sunday, with 12 to 24 inches likely at elevations above 7,000 feet. Lower elevations will see rain initially, with some snow possible overnight.

The Utah Department of Transportation warns that mountain travel could become treacherous, particularly on I-80, US-89, and other high-elevation roads. Drivers should prepare for chain restrictions and reduced visibility. Those heading into the mountains should carry a winter survival kit and check UDOT updates before traveling.

Salt Lake City will see mild temperatures, with highs near 48°F on Saturday and 52°F on Sunday. Rain will be the primary precipitation in the valleys, though brief snow showers could mix in overnight. Wind gusts may also impact travel in canyon areas.

The storm is expected to continue into early next week, with additional snowfall possible in the mountains and unsettled conditions persisting across northern Utah. Travelers should remain alert to changing weather conditions, as a shift in the storm’s track could increase snowfall amounts or extend travel impacts.

Residents are advised to monitor forecasts, limit non-essential mountain travel, and prepare for winter driving conditions through the weekend.
