Chicago, IL – Drivers in Chicago should brace for a slow and slippery evening commute Monday as snow moves into the city by late afternoon, bringing 2 to 4 inches of accumulation and dangerous road conditions through midnight.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin in downtown Chicago and nearby neighborhoods between 3 and 5 p.m., with temperatures below freezing causing snow to stick quickly to untreated surfaces. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 12 a.m. Tuesday.

Major arteries such as the Dan Ryan (I-90/94), Kennedy Expressway (I-90), Eisenhower (I-290), Stevenson (I-55), and Lake Shore Drive are likely to see rapid deterioration, especially during the peak of the evening rush. Reduced visibility and slick conditions may create traffic backups as early as 4 p.m.

City crews are expected to deploy salt trucks, but drivers should leave early, reduce speed, and allow extra time. CTA buses and Metra trains may also experience delays during the heaviest snowfall.

Snowfall is expected to taper by midnight, but icy patches will persist into the Tuesday morning commute.
