Binghamton, NY – Another round of winter weather is set to impact central New York this weekend, bringing heavy snow and gusty winds. Forecasters warn that travel along I-81 and surrounding highways could become hazardous, with snowfall rates intensifying overnight Saturday into early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service, confidence is increasing for widespread plowable snow, with up to 8 inches possible in some areas. The system is expected to begin Saturday evening, peak overnight, and taper off by Sunday afternoon. Wind gusts up to 50 mph may create blowing snow and reduced visibility.
A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Friday for Broome, Chenango, and surrounding counties. Gusty winds may down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages. By Saturday, another storm system will move in, bringing a higher likelihood of heavy snow accumulation.
Residents should prepare for difficult travel conditions, especially on untreated roads. Those with weekend travel plans should check for updated alerts and consider postponing non-essential trips. The extended forecast shows a chance of lingering snow showers into early next week, with temperatures remaining below freezing.
