Northern Plains — Dangerous snow squalls and blizzard conditions are expected to impact portions of the Northern Plains today, according to the NOAA National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center.

Forecasters say a strong cold front sweeping across the region is expected to produce numerous snow showers and snow squalls, most likely from eastern Montana through north-central Nebraska. Snow squalls are expected to develop quickly and may result in sudden, hazardous travel conditions.

In addition to snow squalls, damaging winds are forecast across the northern Plains. Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected over the northern High Plains, with sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph across much of the remainder of the region. These winds are expected to cause extensive blowing snow, particularly across eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, where an existing snowpack is in place.

The Weather Prediction Center warns that blizzard conditions are forecast in some areas, with near-zero visibility possible. The combination of snow squalls, blowing snow, and strong winds may result in dangerous travel conditions, including an increased risk of chain-reaction vehicle accidents. Power outages are also possible, especially where winds are strongest and for high-profile vehicles.

A snow squall risk area has been outlined across parts of Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, and Nebraska, with snow squalls considered likely in portions of central South Dakota. Blizzard Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for parts of the region.

The National Weather Service urges drivers who encounter a snow squall to slow down, turn on headlights and hazard lights, and avoid sudden braking if unable to safely exit the roadway.
